Surfing Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules of the Lineup

Whether you're a first-time surfer paddling out for the first time or a seasoned regular at your local break, understanding surf etiquette is essential. These unwritten rules keep the lineup safe, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone in the water.

1. Right of Way: Who Has Priority?

The surfer closest to the peak — the breaking part of the wave — has priority. If someone is already up and riding, do not drop in on their wave. Dropping in is one of the most disrespectful things you can do in the surf and can lead to dangerous collisions.

2. Don't Snake the Lineup

Snaking means repeatedly paddling around other surfers to gain priority position. It's frustrating, unsportsmanlike, and will quickly earn you a cold reception from the locals. Wait your turn and respect the natural rotation of the lineup.

3. Paddle Wide, Not Through

When paddling back out after a wave, always try to paddle around the breaking waves — not through the lineup. If you can't avoid it, paddle behind the surfer riding the wave, not in front of them.

4. Communicate in the Lineup

A simple "going left" or "going right" as you take off can prevent collisions and confusion. Good communication shows awareness and respect for those around you.

5. Respect the Locals

Local surfers have often spent years building their relationship with a break. Visiting surfers should show respect — don't dominate the lineup, be friendly, and take time to understand the vibe of the spot before paddling out.

6. Hold Onto Your Board

A loose board is a dangerous projectile. Always try to maintain control of your surfboard. If you're learning, consider surfing at less crowded spots until you're confident in your ability to control your board in the water.

7. Apologise When You Make a Mistake

Everyone drops in by accident or misjudges a wave from time to time. A genuine apology goes a long way. Acknowledge the mistake, say sorry, and move on — it keeps the atmosphere in the water positive.

8. Don't Litter

The ocean is our playground and our responsibility. Never leave rubbish on the beach or in the water. If you see litter, pick it up. The surf community has a deep connection to the sea — let's keep it clean.
