El Niño & La Niña: A Surfer's Guide to the World's Most Powerful Weather Patterns

If you've ever shown up to your favourite break only to find it completely blown out, or scored the best session of your life out of nowhere — there's a good chance El Niño or La Niña had something to do with it.

These two climate phenomena shape surf conditions across the entire planet. Understanding them won't just make you sound smart at the beach — it'll help you plan better trips, read forecasts more confidently, and make sense of why some seasons are absolutely firing while others are a total write-off.

So, What Actually Are They?

El Niño and La Niña are opposite phases of something called the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) — a natural climate cycle driven by changes in sea surface temperatures and wind patterns across the tropical Pacific Ocean.

Think of it like the ocean breathing. Sometimes it exhales warmth eastward (El Niño), and sometimes it inhales, pushing warm water west and pulling cold water up in the east (La Niña). These shifts ripple outward and affect weather patterns — and surf — all over the world.

El Niño: The Warm One

During El Niño, the trade winds that normally blow westward across the Pacific weaken or even reverse. Warm water that's usually pooled near Australia and Indonesia sloshes back toward South America. The result? A warmer-than-average central and eastern Pacific.

What this means for surf:

  • California & the US West Coast — El Niño is generally a gift. More powerful, more frequent swells track into Southern California and beyond. The jet stream dips south, sending storm systems directly at the coast. Some of the most legendary seasons in California surf history have happened during strong El Niño years.
  • Hawaii — Can be a mixed bag. North Shore swells can be inconsistent, and the storm tracks sometimes miss the islands entirely.
  • Australia & Indonesia — Often the losers here. Drier conditions, weaker trade winds, and less consistent swell. Indo can go flat for weeks at a time during a strong El Niño.
  • South America (Peru, Chile) — Warmer water and altered swell windows. Some spots fire, others go quiet.

La Niña: The Cool One

La Niña is essentially the opposite. The trade winds strengthen, pushing warm water further west toward Australia and Indonesia. Cold, nutrient-rich water upwells along the South American coast. The central and eastern Pacific cools down.

What this means for surf:

  • Australia — La Niña typically brings more rainfall, more tropical cyclone activity, and — crucially — more swell. East coast surfers often see bigger, more consistent waves during La Niña years.
  • Indonesia — Trade winds strengthen, which can mean cleaner conditions and more consistent groundswells reaching Bali, the Mentawais, and beyond.
  • California — Generally quieter. The jet stream shifts north, storm tracks miss the coast, and surfers are left waiting for scraps.
  • Hawaii — North Shore can absolutely go off during La Niña. Stronger trade winds and more active North Pacific storm systems can produce some serious XXL swells.

How Long Do They Last?

Each phase typically lasts 9 to 12 months, though strong events can stretch to 18 months or more. They don't follow a strict schedule — ENSO cycles occur roughly every 2 to 7 years, and their intensity varies wildly. A weak La Niña might barely register at your local break. A strong El Niño can rewrite the record books.

How to Use This as a Surfer

You don't need a meteorology degree to use ENSO to your advantage. Here's how to work it into your surf planning:

  • Check ENSO forecasts before booking trips. NOAA, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and other agencies publish regular ENSO outlooks. If a strong El Niño is forecast, maybe skip Indo and look at California or Portugal instead.
  • Understand your home break's tendencies. Does your local spot go flat during El Niño? Does it fire during La Niña? Pay attention over the years and you'll start to see patterns.
  • Don't treat it as gospel. ENSO influences conditions — it doesn't control them. You can still score perfect waves during a "bad" phase, and get skunked during a "good" one. Swell forecasting is still your best friend.
  • Think seasonally. ENSO effects are most pronounced during certain times of year. In the Northern Hemisphere, winter is when El Niño and La Niña tend to have the biggest impact on surf.

The Bigger Picture

Beyond surf, El Niño and La Niña have massive global consequences — droughts, floods, coral bleaching, fishery collapses, and more. As ocean temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, scientists are studying how ENSO patterns may shift in intensity and frequency.

For surfers, who are arguably more tuned into the ocean than most, understanding these cycles is part of a deeper relationship with the sea. The ocean isn't random — it has rhythms, moods, and patterns. The more you understand them, the better you can ride them.
